The top Sunni Muslim cleric and legal scholar Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawy died of a heart attack on Wednesday (March 10, 2010) in Saudi Arabia. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, one of the leading seats of Sunni Islamic thought, was attacked for some of his controversial rulings. His opposition to the niqab or face veil except in certain limited exceptions caused uproar last October. Despite the controversies he was widely respected in Islamic scholarly circles.
