Today in 1804...

The Napoleonic Code (a.k.a Code Civil) went into force. The Code was enormously influential on France and other European countries, and on legal systems throughout the world. Although there were other European codes prior to the Code Civil, it is considered to be the first successful attempt at codification. Among its many achievements one can find the clear establishment of the rule of law, prohibition of ex post facto laws, setting up a divorce regime of mutual consent, and basically replacing the multiplicity of laws, regulations, and privileges that were a remnant of feudal and pre-revolutionary France.
